Writing can be heaven. The words flow, and you love them, and you love writing, love it.
But writing isn’t always like that. It can be lonely, exhausting. Fraught with anxiety and frustration.
To paraphrase Thomas Mann, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1929, a writer is someone who finds writing more difficult than other people. Being a writer is hard sometimes!
I know this, because I’m a writer. And I know this, because I’ve been supporting writers for 20 years.
As a writing coach, I draw on all of my experience as a writer and editor to provide gentle, empathetic, sensitive support to fellow writers.
If you’re feeling lost, or alone, or stuck in your writing, can I help?
The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.
– Sylvia Plath
My approach as a writing coach
Above all, as EB White put it: I admire anybody who has the guts to write anything at all. It doesn’t matter what you’re writing, it doesn’t matter how well you’re writing, it doesn’t matter how experienced you are – if you’re writing, or you want to write, I respect and value that.
These are the foundations of my coaching practice:
We have to write what wants to be written – what we ache to write.
What we write is valid and important and valuable.
Perfection is not only non-existent, it’s not something to strive for.
Rules can be helpful guidelines, but we can bend them and break them and rewrite them.
It’s okay to be lost, or fragile, or anxious, or frustrated in our writing.
We don’t have to share what we write – and when we do share, we can do that in any way that feels good to us.
We don’t have to finish what we begin. We can move on – and we can go back.
We don’t have to write only this kind of story or poem in this style; we can write anything we want.
We don’t have to win competitions or sign publishing contracts or sell loads of books or get heaps of five-star reviews or build an army of followers on social media. We can just… write.
Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.

* Please keep in mind that I’m a writing coach, not a counsellor. I am, however, deeply empathetic and compassionate, and have lived experience of anxiety, OCD and PTSD. And I know well how much writing can improve wellbeing.
No matter what your age or your life path, whether making art is your career or your hobby or your dream, it is not too late or too egotistical or too selfish or too silly to work on your creativity.
My rate for coaching is £50 an hour, and I coach in whatever way works best for you. We can exchange emails. We can talk on a video call – with your camera switched off, if you prefer. We can meet in person if you’re able to travel to Beeston, Nottingham.
I find that many of my clients like to email, especially once we get to know each other a little. Because email is based on writing – which is, after all, our passion and comfort zone. Because writing allows for time and space for reflection. And because my support is captured in words, to be read again and again if needed.
For some writers, one or two sessions is enough to untangle a knot and boost their confidence. Other writers work with me over the longer term. I am happy to support writers however works best for them.
