Does anyone remember this magazine? 'Dribble matter' indeed. And in this issue, my writing was published for the first time ever, encapsulating all the mardy angst of 14-year-old me.

As 'Star Bard', I won a £10 book token, which I'm guessing I spent in WH Smiths on a Point Horror book.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, the quiz page is covered in biro and the Take Thatter I should have married, apparently, was Gary.

How I spent a cosy half hour this afternoon. And yes, I bend books this way. And fold corners. Sacrilege for a book lover and editor? I say not: for me books are objects of beauty, but also objects to use in a relaxed, creative, human way.

I recently spent a delightful day in A&E. Needless to say, I wasn't feeling particularly great and badly needed some distraction.

Thankfully, I'd had the presence of mind to bring a book, and I escaped into... well, hell, thanks to @kuangrf's novel Katabasis. Who knew hell could be so comforting?

The moral of the story: always, always bring a book, wherever you go. And biscuits, of course.

Ophelia (Sir John Everett Millais), inspired by Hamlet (Shakespeare), and The Lady of Shalott (John William Waterhouse), inspired by the poem of the same name (Alfred, Lord Tennyson).

I first saw these paintings, on display at Tate Britain, in my early twenties, and they've haunted me since. Something of the tragedy in them found its way into my first novel – a girl in a dress claimed by the sea.

On that cheery note, I conclude with a picture of Giles Penny's statue at Canary Wharf. I can confirm that on a sunny day, this chap has a lovely warm knee. (Strangely, despite my enthusiasm about this, my kids weren't excited to stroke his knee and seemed somewhat mortified that I was doing so.)

This is what sharing/publishing can feel like for a writer: dangling in a cable car, 90 feet off the ground, absolutely terrified.

The thing is, if we don’t do the scary thing, we don’t learn that actually, hard as it is, we CAN do it. And the more we do it, the less scary it becomes – and the more we believe in ourselves.

Not that I’ll be riding the London cable car again anytime soon. Once was plenty for me.

But I will keep publishing my writing, in my own way, even though it's scary. If I can dangle high above the Thames in a glass box on a string, I can share a story.

Plymouth is my happy place, where I spent summers

Plymouth is my happy place, where I spent summers as a child, and near where we now stay each summer is Durnford Street – once, briefly, the workplace of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

In commemoration of the author practising medicine here in 1882, there are 23 Sherlock Holmes quotes inlaid in the pavement. My favourites:

"Life is infinitely stranger than anything which the mind of man could invent."

"Any truth is better than indefinite doubt."

Every time we walk down this street, I think: if I lived here, I'd polish the plaque outside my house until it gleamed!
